Greetings

A simple 'salaam alaikum' is appreciated. Men and women may prefer different forms of greeting; follow the other person's lead.

Dress

Dress modestly in public places — shoulders and knees covered is a good rule. Swimwear is for pools and beaches only.

Photography

Ask before photographing people, especially women, and avoid taking photos of government buildings or military sites.

  • Respect prayer times
  • Avoid public displays of affection
  • Use your right hand for greeting and eating

Hospitality

If you are offered Arabic coffee, accept with your right hand, and signal when you have had enough by gently shaking the cup.
