Camel rider in the Qatar desert

A living tradition

Camels have long been part of life in the Arabian desert, used for transport, milk and racing. Today many are valued as symbols of heritage.

What a ride is like

Camels kneel to let you on. As the animal stands up, hold the handle and lean back slightly, then forward as it rises. Rides at camps are short and gentle.

Tips

Wear closed shoes and comfortable clothes. Follow the handler's instructions and be calm around the animal.

  • Hold on firmly as the camel stands
  • Keep your feet still
  • Ask permission before touching
